Looking for Shade...

...not from the sun.

I've decided I'd like to have this little lamp on my dining table. It's by the same potter as the inspiration piece for the colors of the living room, and picks up on the sand and the dark brown of the living room area's planned colors.

However, its shade is worn, and too large, and doesn't let the light shine through. The shade is now in the Outbox, and the lamp is standing shyly, shadeless, on the table (hiding behind bags of things that have been packed up to be taken away tomorrow).

I'm thinking a creamy color for the shade. Other thoughts? Thoughts on shape?

  1. A drum shade would make that teardrop shape sing, I think. A bell shade--though classic--is just a bit too much matchy-matchy--in my opinion--for the current times. A Coolie shade might be really nice with this: but I don't think they are "in." I haven't seen any lately, anyway! Burlap texture would be fabulous. Parchment, too.

When I'm shopping for shades, I haunt Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Walmart. Take the lamp with you and put it in the car: that way you can test how it looks right after you purchase it--and won't have to make another trip. Sears is also good.

You know how to pick the shade" The height should accomodate the lightbulb, of course, and "hide" the metal bits above the base. Here's an article to get you started, if you need it: http://makeover.about.com/od/roomredesigns/bb/lampshades.htm

  3. As I read the comment, I thought "This has to be from Alana!" I admit I was puzzled at first!

This is very helpful. Thanks, Alana!

  4. Alana -- I just tried a drum shade that I had on hand on the little lamp, and although this particular shade isn't the right size, I agree that the drum is an excellent shape to go with! I also tried it on my other lamp -- one of the twisty bronze ones I bought for my last apartment and the drum shape looks much more modern with it as well. First chance I get I'll head for Cdn Tire, and the other stores you mentioned! Thanks!
