As posted over at Alana's place, these are the tasks set out in the traditional Cure:
On p. 208 of Apartment Therapy, the Eight Step Home Cure, MG-R would have us do this: (as usual, my comments are in italics)
Bones:
Clean the bedroom and related storage -- Yes, that is definitely in the plan. Quite a bit of that process has been done already, though.
Buy an air filter for your bedroom. -- No, I won't be doing that.
Buy new sheets, pad, or mattress as needed. -- No new purchases for the bed are scheduled. Mattress will do, mattress pad is fine, and in summer I just use a fitted sheet and the duvet cover, no top sheet.
Breath:
Declutter the bedroom -- That process is already well underway.
Arrange the bed against the best wall -- The bed is on the only possible wall, which happily enough turns out to be the best wall by M G-R standards.
Heart:
Head:
Look into ways to improve your sleep -- Having some form of lining behind the curtains would help me sleep beyond the time of sunrise when the sunshine streams in my east-facing bedroom window. I'll look into that.
Optional: Outfit your bed to reduce allergens -- I'm happy with the way my bed is "outfitted".
What I'll be doing this week:
Here are the "Before" pictures of the bedroom. It has progressed a bit since then.
This is looking from the hallway into the bedroom.
The rocking chair is not only leaving that corner, it is leaving the building. I've decided that it's time another family member had a chance to enjoy Grandma's rocking chair and Grandpa's bookcase, so they are going to cousins. I've had the rocking chair for at least 25 years, and the bookcase for about 20.
Hopefully, I'll get enough done in the Writing Room that I can take the blue drapes down from there, and put them up in the bedroom. I will definitely get rid of the torn sheers behind the brown curtains as well. (The brown curtains are going in the trash.) The bookcase in the bedroom has been reorganized and now only holds DVDs and CDs, no books. I find I like it that way. (They aren't watched or listened to in there, it's just where they are kept.)
I still really love the bedding I bought when I was in my last apartment. I've removed the wall art, and changed lamps (again) since this pic was taken. I want to put a mirror up where the large painting is in this pic -- that's where I style my hair, because there's a plug-in where it's easy to put the hair dryer and curling iron, and I have a mirror that was Mum's & Dad's that would fit nicely there.
I didn't take a pic of the dresser or the closet, since I wasn't willing to be that honest in my Before pics! But that's where the major work will be happening. The drawers are cleaned out and organized now, which is a big weight off my mind. The top of the dresser needs decluttering, as does the shelf in the closet. I may or may not decide to beautify the front of the dresser drawers with black shiny heavy paper the way I did my bedside table a few years ago. I did the top when I first moved in to this apartment, but have never done the drawers. It may be time.
Of course, besides the bedroom, work in the Writing Room and Storage Room continue. Last week I didn't get much of anything done, because I spent the last part of the week in Minneapolis (and the first part of the week getting ready for the trip). I will post a little bit about that trip tomorrow. Wanted to get back on board the Hybrid Cure bus tonight.

Whew. Glad you caught the bus! That is lovely bedding. How about putting the large print over the bed--and then flank it with mirror on the two sides?
ReplyDelete--Or do you have those nasty concrete walls you had in your last apartment to deal with here, too?
You will notice that I too didn't post any real before photos. I nd to straighten up in there first--I'm in the midst of switching seasons and trying things on.
Love to hear about Minneapolis! Do tell.
I don't like to put anything directly over the bed, because I'm scared it'll fall on me in the night!
ReplyDeleteI don't have concrete walls here, I have normal whatever that stuff is called. Metal studs and cardboard walls. (Yes, I know it's not cardboard, but my poor tired brain can't remember the proper term.)
Flanking anything with mirrors on two sides would involve finding matching mirrors. I just have one mirror. What you describe would look lovely in a normal bedroom. I don't know how it would work in mine -- the dresser is on one side of the bed, parellel to the bed, which makes a symmetrical arrangement not exactly possible. I think I need to be brave and take a picture that shows the other side of the room.
Minneapolis post coming up tomorrow!
I like your bedding too, it's lovely and light and has a very beautiful floral print or embroidery.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate the Alana's suggestion of two mirrors, I do not think those need to look alike, or then maybe put to the other side a picture/painting that is about the same size as the mirror. It would make it look more symmetrical, if you like things that way.
