Here a pound, there a pound...

I went to the doctor a couple of days ago. He measured me (5 feet, 1 inch) and weighed me (his brand new, just-bought-that-day scale weighs six pounds heavier than my home scale does), calculated my Body Mass Index as 31 (not a good number) and decided that I need to lose

TWENTY POUNDS.

I should be able to do that. I've done it before. And therein lies the rub. For a human, I make a very good yoyo. This time, I need to take off the weight and keep it off.

I have an incentive picture on my fridge. I have a weight loss buddy keeping me accountable. (She just talked me out of eating cheesesticks for lunch. Thank you, J!)

Not surprisingly, the doctor emphasized that I need to exercise as well as controlling my eating habits. In England and LA, walking seemed easier. I was walking for a purpose and so didn't notice the distances. Here, when I just go out for a walk, I start thinking about how I'm feeling, and discourage myself. (My original wish, to spend 4 months in LA this winter, would have helped with that. Since I can't do that, I will have to make exercise work here.)

Here's a relatively recent picture. I'm the taller one ("tall" being a relative thing. Keep in mind that my version of "tall" means 5'1".) I could also have said, I'm the lumpier one.

I will keep you posted.

Wish me luck!

  1. Oh I do wish you luck. I know my GP will nag me next week when I have to see her for a Well Woman Clinic appointment.

In 2009 I changed jobs and moved house which meant walking and cycling to and from work and I also changed my diet dramatically. I got thinner and toned up my leg muscles, but another GP from the same practice weighed me and he said the weight loss was not very much at all. I cannot remember now how little it was, but I voiced my disappointment at the time.

He did say however I had turned a lot of fat into muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Which made me feel much better.

Then winter came and with it the worst weather to hit the UK for many a long year. I became virtually house bound for four months, it was treacherous underfoot so walking and cycling were not practical and even driving to the nearest village (8 miles away) was difficult. The books came out and the TV and DVD player became well used and the weight went back on.

And it has stayed on and been added to. All my own fault, despite various feeble attempts to lose it.

So, I sympathise and wish you luck and am off to trawl the internet for turbo trainers, so that I may ride my bicycle indoors when there is snow outside and temperature in the minus figures.

    Cheers,

    JB

  2. Good luck! I started back in June? July? and lost 19 pounds! I have been simply keeping it off since then. I am quite pleased. Twenty pounds makes a big difference--but so will ten. Glad you've got a buddy. That helps.

  3. @ JB -- that thing about muscle versus fat is very true, but does make for a disappointing weigh-in. I'll be thinking of you next week. Tell the GP about the turbo-trainer plans. Excellent idea.

@ Not Really Emma -- I knew you'd lost weight, but hadn't realized you'd lost that much! Good for you! I hope some day to be able to report the same.
