Is a Puzzlement...

As you know, all this week I have been ignoring the stern glare of Mary Poppins, and have not been doing the things that need to be done in order to prepare for the next phase of "Strew The Furniture Around The Apartment in a Different Pattern and See What Happens". This is because I am waiting for a strained muscle to heal. It's getting better, but it's not there yet.

However, I was looking around the apartment today, wondering just where I'm going to put everything during the "Strew The Furniture Around" portion of the next phase. There are three bookcases to be emptied and moved, one in the living room and two in the storage room. There's a desk to be emptied and moved. There's a dresser to be emptied and moved. There is stuff in the storage room in front of the two bookcases that needs to go somewhere so that the two bookcases in the storage room can be dealt with. All that emptying is going to result in quite a pile of stuff to be tucked somewhere -- and that somewhere has to be a somewhere that isn't intended as a Final Location for any of the stuff that is to be moved. Is a Puzzlement, to quote Yul Brynner in The King and I.

When in doubt, blog about it, which puts off the inevitable step of actually having to do something about it.

In other news, yesterday my Dad phoned and said he was going somewhere at 2:00, so it would be best if I waited until today to visit. Today he phoned, and said he had something on at 1:00 and something at 2:00, and he wasn't sure about 3:00. So I said, "I'll see you tomorrow". My father, the social butterfly.

I'm going to go stare at a bookcase for a while.

Hi scb!

I guess I am behind the times, I still think of you as Scb--and not nsdb. Finally found the post which sort of explained the sudden increase of "staff" in your life! You've moved into your parent's place, then--and are making it your own?

It sounds like a formidable task, really. Sorry I've been incommuicado for a while. I promise I'll come for tea more often--those are seriously lovely teacups your Mom has collected.

I'm really still SCB! The "NSDB" is just a silliness in the Poppins posts.

Well, a little silliness can be a BIG help with a big job.

My usual method in these situations is to work out what WON'T be moving and then stack Stuff on that and also in corners out of the path of movement.

Do you remember those pocket games that had a bunch of tiles in a frame with one empty spot, and the goal was to get the tiles in the right order by sliding them around? That's what this type of furniture rearranging always feels like to me.

Oooh. those pocket games. I was never too clever at those.

As for things that aren't being moved, so stack stuff on them, they're at a premium. There's a corner of my bedroom that will get loaded with books, and under the table is an option. I suppose the kitchen counter for breakables... Where there's a will there's a way, right?

I like to empty out one room at a time and figure out what I want in it first. Then I have less stuff to move to decide what I want in the next room.

But honestly, I just like to rearrange furniture. I think it's fun. Sorembe I may be the least helpful person around.

Here's the thing -- I know just where everything is to go, and it'll be a sort of domino effect once it gets going, but because I can't do lifting, I have to hire movers to come in and actually move the furniture, so everything has to be ready for them to just start the dominos moving.
